Kinsmen Lotto for the Alberta Children’s Hospital
Every year, one in four kids in Calgary – and thousands more across the province – rely on care from the Alberta Children’s Hospital because they are sick or injured. And every year, Kinsmen Lotto supporters have helped Alberta Children’s Hospital child health experts provide those kids with the best care possible.
This year’s lotto will fund the purchase of a Next Generation DNA Short Sequencer, state-of-the-art technology that will help Alberta Children’s Hospitals child health experts unlock the mysteries of genetic disease. The genetics researchers plan to use sequencing technology to help revolutionize understanding, diagnosis and treatment of disease. They hope to:
- Replace invasive biopsies with tests as simple as cheek swabs
- Shorten the time it takes to find genetic anomalies
- And provide treatments which are personalized to the individual child
Since 1993, the Kinsmen Lotto has raised more than $23 million to help children across all areas of the hospital! Over the years, lotto funds have played a big role in:
- Helping establish an ENT program at the hospital, so thousands of kids with Ear, Nose and Throat conditions could get specialized care.
- Making it possible for all babies in Alberta to be tested at birth for Cystic Fibrosis, ensuring treatment can begin as early as possible.
- Funding crucial research to help children with injury and illness of the brain.
- Helping our children’s hospital acquire a 3T MRI, state-of-the-art technology which promises to help revolutionize diagnostic imaging for kids with brain and heart-related illness.
- Building our new Alberta Children’s Hospital!
- Awarded 60 Grand Prize Showhomes to Albertans.
