Preparing food and actively cooking can be very therapeutic as it stimulates the senses, allowing residents to recall past cooking experiences from their long-term memory.

Thanks to raffle supporters like you, the Therapeutic Cooking Program is able to provide an environment for residents to work and interact together, sharing stories and memories about cooking. This helps to alleviate the feeling of boredom, helplessness, and loneliness that often comes with living away from the family home.

Meet Pacey: Manitoba’s 2023 Champion Child

After more than 30 surgeries, years of testing, and countless days in hospital, nine-year-old Pacey Wall’s digestive system still won’t work.

“Even though it sounds like it’s hopeless, it’s not. We have an amazing team here. We trust them and we have a really great relationship with them,” says Kim Wall, Pacey’s mom.

Pacey has intestinal failure, but what’s causing it is unclear. Pacey’s condition started when he was two years old and has progressively gotten worse. He’s had a wide range of surgeries to help his digestion and has now had his colon removed, and a colostomy placed. He can’t eat solid foods, so he relies on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), which is a solution of essential nutrients given through an IV.

Since 2017 Pacey has been in and out of HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital as complications came up, with his longest stay lasting six weeks. In 2020 he was in hospital for both Christmas and his birthday, so he’s really gotten to know the Child Life team.

“Until you have a child in hospital for as long as Pacey has been you just can’t truly understand what it’s like,” says Kim. Read more of Pacey’s story.

Backpack Buddies and CKNW Kids’ Fund have partnered for a mega 50/50 raffle!

By purchasing your lottery tickets, children like Caitlyn and mothers like Allison will be able to continue to receive the support that they need.

Caitlyn is 2 years old with a complex medical history. She presents with a Global Developmental Delay and feeding difficulties, and requires a G-tube for feeding. Caitlyn’s feeding pump, supplies, and formula are not provided by the At-Home Program and are crucial to her livelihood. CKNW Kids’ Fund was able to grant $2,500 to fund Caitlyn’s feeding equipment and supplies.

Allison is a mother in B.C. and has noted that although she works hard, “the bills add up and sometimes [they] don’t quite make it to payday at the end of the month”. With the help of Backpack Buddies, children are provided with balanced meals to ensure they can get through the weekend, and to the end of the month, without going hungry.

Tickets are available for online purchase now until May 4, 2023. 1 ticket costs $5, 20 tickets cost $20, 100 costs $40, and 300 tickets for only $100. Each ticket directly contributes to the jackpot. 50% will go to the winner drawn on May 5 in Burnaby, BC. The other 50% will be equally split between CKNW Kids’ Fund and Backpack Buddies.
