Eight-month-old Layna has spent the majority of her life within the walls of Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH). Her mother, Sydney, noticed differences during this pregnancy compared to her previous ones, prompting regular appointments at JPCH from Île-à-la-Crosse, in anticipation of Layna’s birth. Despite concerns raised by scans, Layna’s arrival caught everyone off guard when she wasn’t breathing, leading to immediate CPR from the medical team.
The following months were filled with uncertainty as Layna battled through numerous health challenges, including a diagnosis of a PBX-1 genetic mutation affecting her kidneys, lungs, and heart, leading to multiple surgeries and procedures. Despite the hardships, Sydney describes Layna as a spirited and cheerful baby who faces adversity with resilience. The specialized care at JPCH has been invaluable to Layna’s recovery. Although there is uncertainty about her future, Sydney holds onto hope for Layna’s eventual reunion with her father and siblings, eagerly awaiting their return home together.
