Freezing pain in its tracks
If you’ve ever felt a sharp sting from a stubbed toe or post-surgery ache, you know how powerful pain can be.
At St. Paul’s Hospital, a technique called cryoneurolysis uses extreme cold to temporarily block acute pain signals. Thanks to new technology introduced by anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Jew, this once-cumbersome procedure is now portable and can be delivered right at the bedside.
Using a device about the size of a power drill, physicians use ultrasound to guide a tiny ice ball to the nerve, freezing pain in its tracks.
For patients like Julie Bard, who received cryoneurolysis with her ninth cardiac surgery, the difference was dramatic.
“I was more alert, sitting up sooner, and didn’t feel as much pain,” she says. “I didn’t need as much pain medication, and I wasn’t getting sick all the time from the side effects.”
Your raffle support is part of a bigger journey – one where patients find pain relief, embrace comfort, and step into healing with strength and hope.
