Devon, a fire fighter from West Vancouver Local 1525, shared his experience.

“Burn camp was truly amazing and easily the highlight of my year. Serving as a counsellor for the youngest group (kids aged 6-8), I feel incredibly grateful to have been a part of some of their initial camp experiences.

Life is filled with peaks and valleys for everyone, moments that can feel isolating. What bonds these kids may sometimes also contribute to their sense of isolation outside Burn Camp. However, the annual consistency of Burn Camp is monumental for many of these children. It provides them with an opportunity to process their experiences alongside peers who have faced similar hardships. It’s also a chance for them to recognize that what may sometimes feel like a heavy burden is, in fact, a source of great strength.

As fire fighters, our role often involves responding to people’s most challenging moments. Unfortunately, we rarely have the chance to follow up with patients and witness their progress. Being a part of burn camp is a gift for us. It allows us to observe these kids thriving, finding healing, and being there every step of the way. It serves as a powerful reminder of why we approach our job with such care and dedication, inspiring us to be the best we can be.”
