Lights Go Out at Bright Nights: Event Cancelled Due to Theft

VANCOUVER, BC, December 31, 2021 — The BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund needs your help before midnight tonight! The charity’s biggest fundraising event was suddenly cancelled today following the theft of its power source, providing light for millions of twinkling lights.

After extreme weather cancelled Bright Nights in Stanley Park this week, the Burn Fund was hopeful to bring the magic of the holidays back for its final three nights, but sadly now Bright Nights is left in the dark for the remainder of the season.

“Bright Nights has come up against challenges and barriers this year – from Covid restrictions, extreme weather and now this. We are truly heartbroken,” says Gord Ditchburn, President, BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.

The Burn Fund is the 43-year-old charity of BC’s professional fire fighters. The Burn Fund also offers families travelling to Vancouver for treatment the opportunity to stay at Home Away at the Burn Fund Centre. Located at Main and 23rd Ave, Home Away features eight apartment suites and is a healing place for when people need it most.

The Burn Fund’s online donations are down 40 per cent this holiday season. Now, freezing temperatures have stopped the Bright Nights train in its tracks with the cold weather bringing on mechanical problems. The Burn Fund’s largest fundraising event has been closed since Monday. The fire fighters’ charity hopes it will warm up enough to open for the final three days.

While Bright Nights in Stanley Park was able to open this holiday season, it did so at 50 per cent capacity. As a result, donations at the park were down 70 per cent compared to 2019. With this week’s closure that number is now closer to 80 per cent.

“The Bright Nights 50/50 is the Burn Fund’s only hope at recouping these vital fundraising dollars. Now we are asking for the public’s support. The Little Lionhearts Family Camp is one program supported by the Bright Nights 50/50. In BC, more than 950 children are treated for serious burn injuries each year and 74 per cent of these children are aged one to four. Burns are the third leading cause of accidental injury-related hospitalization for toddlers in this province.

Recognizing the need for family support, the Burn Fund launched the Little Lionhearts Family Camp in November 2019. Welcoming toddlers, their siblings, and their parents, this weekend retreat supports healing as a unit, because just like a pride of lions, these families stick together.

In October the Burn Fund reunited these families following a year of virtual programming. Featuring music and play therapy, families enjoyed a Pumpkin Patch Day Out. Watch this video to see all the fun they got up to!
