About the Vancouver Naval Museum

The Vancouver Naval Museum is operated by the Vancouver Naval Museum and Heritage Society. It is dedicated to the history and heritage of the Royal Canadian Navy.

From the traditions of the Royal Navy to the current total force concept, the Naval Museum seeks to display and define the Royal Canadian Navy since its inception in 1910.

The Naval Museum is dedicated to the exploits and remembrance of the Royal Canadian Navy with particular emphasis on the Battle of the Atlantic (1939-1945), its local naval heroes and its great contribution to the cultural heritage of the Canadian nation.

The Museum collects, preserves and displays naval equipment, ships’ models, uniforms, badges,decorations & medals, photographs, personal papers, books and trade manuals for the edification of all.

Started by retired Naval officers (Naval Officers Association of BC (NOABC), many being WW2 veterans, the Museum began collecting artefacts in the 1980s. By 1992, its first displays were in a small room off the Drill Deck aboard HMCS Discovery, Vancouver’s Naval Reserve base, situated on Deadman’s Island in Stanley Park. VNMHS became a registered BC Society (S-0037004).

In 1997, VNMHS was registered as a CRA charity (BN 87438 8564 RR0001). That year, it expanded its exhibits, with uniform display cases on the Drill Deck, showing their evolution overtime.

In 2011, it moved its collections, library and archives into a larger space on the second floor of Burrard Block, a different building on the grounds of HMCS Discovery.

In 2014, in association with NOABC, the Shipbuilding Monument project began with the creation of a maquette by BC Sculptor Norm Williams. The project has now reached the stage of having the three figures (RCN officer and male and female shipbuilders) cast in bronze at a Salt Spring Island foundry, prior to the monument being installed in the Shipyard District of the City of North Vancouver.

The Museum is a private collection run by volunteers. It has no paid employees and its collections are insured with funds raised from its supporters.
