SASKATCHEWAN, Thursday, March 13, 2025 — Every two hours in Canada, a child is diagnosed with a critical illness.

Meet nine-year-old, Harlyn. Harlyn loves swimming, gymnastics, friends, and staying up late. Harlyn’s lives with a nervous system disorder and was diagnosed when tumours were discovered on her optic nerves. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she underwent 18 months of weekly chemotherapy. The success of these treatments stopped the tumour growth and allowed her to reduce MRI visits while still maintaining specialist appointments.

Harlyn’s wish to visit West Edmonton Mall took place in late 2023 and following the experience, she declared, “It’s the best birthday ever!” At the World Waterpark, she enjoyed the wave pool and the popular Tropical Typhoon waterslide. She also had the chance to explore the enormous mall and found her favourite gummy bears and sour candies at the sweet shop, IT’SUGAR.

Harlyn’s parents, Kara and Alan, said the entire wish experience was special and even the smallest details were customized for their daughter. For the first time in a long time, the wish allowed Harlyn to delight in life as a child. “She is a strong, conﬁdent, inspirational girl, and we are very proud of her,” Kara said.
