• New laser for the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgical team used to perform the stapedotomy procedure on patients with an inherited condition called otosclerosis, which causes deafness
• An O-Arm which is a portable CT scanner that can be used within the operating room to get real-time information
• Spyglass Direct Visualization system for use in cholangioscopy, a procedure that identifies and addresses blockages in the liver and pancreas

Since June 2020, the Health Sciences North (HSN) 50/50 has funded vital equipment purchases, led health research, and supported capital renovation projects to help build a stronger healthcare system, benefiting Northeastern Ontario’s most vulnerable populations, like frail elderly, children, and those suffering with mental health and addiction challenges.

The HSN 50/50 is set to celebrate its largest December draw ever with a guaranteed $1,000,000 minimum grand prize. Last December’s winner took home over $1.5 Million and this month, the aim is to surpass that!

On November 7, thanks in large part to a $2.3 Million contribution made possible by the HSN 50/50, Health Sciences North opened the Acute and Reactivation Care Centre, a 52-bed centre created to reverse or stabilize a decline in health status, and helping older patients regain their independence. The new Centre was designed so that older adults get the right care in the right place with a clinical team with expertise in treating their health needs. Patients at the ARCC are provided with recreational and rehabilitative care activities and have access to a full team of nurses and allied health with specialized training throughout their stay. There’s a gym, a common eating area, and a courtyard all intended to help get people back on their feet and maintain their independence and quality of life.
