What began as a simple itch on his arms and legs led Carson, a volleyball and hockey player from Montmartre, Sask., to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) for life-saving care.

In the summer of 2024, the itching intensified, causing sores. By December, Carson developed night sweats and in February a persistent cough, but bloodwork during those months came back normal. In late February, his cough worsened, prompting further tests. Then one phone call changed everything: Carson had cancer.

Carson was admitted to JPCH that night for a two-week stay. The next day, he received a PICC line and underwent a biopsy. In early March 2025, Carson was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“The world stood still. Nothing can prepare you in life for finding out your child has cancer. We cried and cried for about a week,” said his mother, Wendy.

When Isabel’s femur suddenly broke shortly after birth, her family from Yorkton, Sask., knew something wasn’t right. Isabel spent a month in the NICU while specialists worked to determine the cause of her broken bone and low muscle tone. Test results later confirmed she had spinal muscular atrophy.

When JPCH opened in 2019, the family moved to Saskatoon to be closer to the specialized care Isabel requires.

Isabel is a regular patient at JPCH. She is followed by the feeding tube team for her G-tube, has undergone numerous X-rays and receives physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy, along with support from a social worker.

“Our experience at JPCH has been incredible. I could not imagine the stays and treatments in a hospital that is not geared towards kids. It has made all the difference in our stays and visits there,” said Marjorie, Isabel’s mom.

When happy four-year-old Ivy, from Regina, Sask., began screaming in pain from basic movement, her family never imagined it would lead to a 31-day stay at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH).

In April 2024, Ivy’s pain worsened, and after a distressing incident at gymnastics, her parents rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. Her condition continued to quickly deteriorate, and she was transferred to JPCH, where she was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease.

Twelve-year-old dancer and Jellycat collector Lillian, from Saskatoon, Sask., has faced a tough battle with an eating disorder, but she hasn’t faced it alone. With the support of her mother, Jeanna, and the compassionate team at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), she’s found strength through the hardest moments.

In 2020, Lillian’s height and weight fell below growth chart standards, and after tests provided no answer, a pediatrician suspected an eating disorder. Lillian was diagnosed with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), but by fall 2024, her health deteriorated further, leading to a second diagnosis: anorexia.

Following an intensive nine-week treatment program, including a nasogastric tube to support her nutritional needs, Lillian continues her journey with weekly follow-ups at JPCH with her doctor, dietitian and psychologist team, bringing hope for brighter days ahead. Click HERE to continue reading Lillian’s story of strength.

Hudson, a ten-year-old from Langenburg, Sask., is an adventurous boy who loves hockey, dirt biking and golfing. But in late 2023, his world changed when what started as a seemingly mild ear infection turned into a life-threatening medical crisis. 

Despite treatment for the ear infection, his condition kept worsening. On January, 2024, a CT scan at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) revealed a large tumour pressing on his brain stem. Surgeons removed 99 per cent of the mass, later diagnosed as Medulloblastoma SHH TP-53, a rare brain cancer.

A routine family drive to the lake turned into a life-threatening emergency when nine-month-old Madison, from Porcupine Plain, Sask., lost consciousness in the car. Her grandmother, a registered nurse, noticed Madison had turned purple and unresponsive. 

Rushed to a rural hospital and later transferred to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), doctors discovered a large brain tumour pressing on her breathing centre. She underwent complex surgery to remove the tumour, which was identified as Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Patricia’s high-risk pregnancy required frequent trips from Pelican Narrows, Sask., to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) for ultrasound appointments every three to four weeks. Due to complications, Patricia underwent two maternal procedures to prevent miscarriage or premature delivery. However, despite their efforts, Pryce was born premature.

Born at 23 weeks and three days, Pryce weighed only one pound, six ounces—a true miracle baby. Pryce was intubated as soon as he was born and was on ventilation for three months. Pryce also required surgery for inguinal hernias, laser eye surgery and PEG-J feeding tube surgery.
