When happy four-year-old Ivy, from Regina, Sask., began screaming in pain from basic movement, her family never imagined it would lead to a 31-day stay at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH).

In April 2024, Ivy’s pain worsened, and after a distressing incident at gymnastics, her parents rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. Her condition continued to quickly deteriorate, and she was transferred to JPCH, where she was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Lillian

Twelve-year-old dancer and Jellycat collector Lillian, from Saskatoon, Sask., has faced a tough battle with an eating disorder, but she hasn’t faced it alone. With the support of her mother, Jeanna, and the compassionate team at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), she’s found strength through the hardest moments.

In 2020, Lillian’s height and weight fell below growth chart standards, and after tests provided no answer, a pediatrician suspected an eating disorder. Lillian was diagnosed with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), but by fall 2024, her health deteriorated further, leading to a second diagnosis: anorexia.

Following an intensive nine-week treatment program, including a nasogastric tube to support her nutritional needs, Lillian continues her journey with weekly follow-ups at JPCH with her doctor, dietitian and psychologist team, bringing hope for brighter days ahead. Click HERE to continue reading Lillian’s story of strength.

Hudson, a ten-year-old from Langenburg, Sask., is an adventurous boy who loves hockey, dirt biking and golfing. But in late 2023, his world changed when what started as a seemingly mild ear infection turned into a life-threatening medical crisis. 

Despite treatment for the ear infection, his condition kept worsening. On January, 2024, a CT scan at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) revealed a large tumour pressing on his brain stem. Surgeons removed 99 per cent of the mass, later diagnosed as Medulloblastoma SHH TP-53, a rare brain cancer.

A routine family drive to the lake turned into a life-threatening emergency when nine-month-old Madison, from Porcupine Plain, Sask., lost consciousness in the car. Her grandmother, a registered nurse, noticed Madison had turned purple and unresponsive. 

Rushed to a rural hospital and later transferred to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), doctors discovered a large brain tumour pressing on her breathing centre. She underwent complex surgery to remove the tumour, which was identified as Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Patricia’s high-risk pregnancy required frequent trips from Pelican Narrows, Sask., to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) for ultrasound appointments every three to four weeks. Due to complications, Patricia underwent two maternal procedures to prevent miscarriage or premature delivery. However, despite their efforts, Pryce was born premature.

Born at 23 weeks and three days, Pryce weighed only one pound, six ounces—a true miracle baby. Pryce was intubated as soon as he was born and was on ventilation for three months. Pryce also required surgery for inguinal hernias, laser eye surgery and PEG-J feeding tube surgery.

From birth, Pryce spent seven months in the NICU at JPCH, and was called a “senior resident” by staff members due to his lengthy stay. Afterward, he was transferred to the PICU for a few weeks, then to the Pediatric Unit. Click HERE to continue reading Pryce’s story of strength.

Aven’s life in Regina, SK., took a drastic turn at 10 years old when what seemed like growing pains turned out to be leukemia. His journey at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) was tough, but the uplifting atmosphere and supportive staff helped him through. Engaging in activities like the Mosaic Child Life Program and visiting the JPCH Movie Theatre brought him joy during his treatment.

“Everyone was so caring and made our time there a little easier as it was a very emotional time for us,” said Rory, Aven’s dad.   

Despite facing challenges like weight loss and food aversion, Aven completed his two-and-a-half-year treatment in August 2023. Now 13, he enjoys playing guitar, building Lego, gaming, and spending time with friends. Aven’s family is grateful for his resilience and for the care at JPCH that helped him find moments of happiness throughout his medical journey.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Kenji

In November 2022, Kenji from Kindersley, SK., experienced ear pain assumed to be an infection. However, Kenji’s symptoms worsened in the months that followed, including extreme ear pain and swelling in his eye which led to his admission to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), where he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). 
  
“Every step of the way, the medical team demonstrated an outstanding level of expertise and proficiency. They displayed not only their medical knowledge but also their incredible ability to provide emotional support to both my son and our entire blended family. During those challenging months, I knew Kenji was in the most capable hands,” Carmela said, Kenji’s mom. 

Kenji underwent 194 days of chemotherapy at JPCH. Now as an eight-year-old, Kenji’s resilience inspires all who know him. He enjoys making friends, learning, drawing, and playing soccer and basketball, cherishing time with family.

Cassidy, a resilient young girl from Saskatoon, SK, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at the age of four, a rare genetic disease affecting one in 2,500 individuals. Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Cassidy and her family have found unwavering support at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), where she receives comprehensive care every three months at the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. 

“I’m so grateful for my team at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for the way they take care of me. I get to continue living my life and thrive because of the way I’m being taken care of,” said Cassidy. 

Cassidy has not only persevered but also become an advocate for CF awareness and research. Alongside her mother, Kimberly, she founded Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand, raising an impressive $125,000 for CF research over 11 years. Now at 16, Cassidy is eagerly embracing new milestones like getting her driver’s license, while also enjoying her passions for singing, spending time with friends, and pursuing a summer job as a certified lifeguard.
