Breast prostheses: Restoring strength and self-assurance after mastectomy

A mastectomy is more than just a physical change. It’s a deeply personal journey of healing and resilience.

The Providence Breast Centre at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital performs 1,200 breast cancer surgeries each year — more than any other hospital in the province, making up 68% of all breast cancer surgeries in Vancouver.

One of the items we’re able to buy are known as ‘fluffies’: they are soft, lightweight, and comfortable breast prostheses that can be a crucial part of the sensitive post-surgery recovery period. For a child in pain, the emergency department can feel like an unfamiliar world: bright lights, strange sounds, new faces, and the uncertainty of what comes next. Every moment can feel endless, adding to their distress – and their parents’ worry.

Because of raffle supporters like you, we can provide pediatric comfort kits to help relax children through distraction and play, as well as provide an outlet for creativity and communication. The comfort kits include fun items like colouring books and crayons, stickers, card games, squeeze toys, and bubble wands.

The Emergency Department at Mount Saint Joseph has had the largest growth in pediatric visits in the region; currently about 10% of daily visits are from young patients. At the Teck Emergency Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital, there were 1,673 pediatric visits last year – a 75% jump compared to the average over the past decade.

Enter the ‘Pay it Forward’ walker program.

The Heart Centre gives patients a walker upon discharge, and the patient then ‘pays it forward’ by donating that walker to the Red Cross when they return to their home community.

Blankets are cherished essentials for newborns, providing warmth, comfort, and security. At St. Paul’s Hospital, a special kind of blanket – the bili blanket – is helping babies recover from jaundice quicker.

The bili blanket is a portable, fibre-optic blanket providing UV phototherapy for infants with severe jaundice, breaking down and removing the bilirubin in their blood. It helps promote bonding between newborns and parents or caregivers that traditional phototherapy treatment cannot provide.

The baby can be held, fed, even rocked throughout the therapy session, without interrupting the benefits of skin-to-skin contact. It promotes a nurturing environment that encourages and supports healthy and healing interactions.

“The bili blanket is one of our most-used pieces of equipment,” says nurse Clara Vuong, who’s worked in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for 18 years. “There is a huge benefit to using them for these babies.” Thanks to your support, the collection of bili blankets at St. Paul’s Hospital has now grown to six.

Bili blankets played a vital role in alleviating Julia Wulffhart’s anxiety as a new parent. When her daughter was born with a case of jaundice that took longer to heal, they were hospitalized for an entire week and Julia was able to use the blanket throughout their stay.
