STARS’ very first patient was Kelly Hulstein, who was only hours old when she was flown from Lethbridge to Calgary that winter day in 1985. She and her twin brother were born more than two months prematurely and faced an uncertain future. While Travis was flown by fixed-wing from Medicine Hat, Kelly was picked up by STARS and taken to Foothills Hospital.
“My family has been grateful to STARS for 30 years,” explains Kelly. “We all know I couldn’t have celebrated my 30th birthday if STARS didn’t pick me up that day.”
STARS president and CEO Andrea Robertson says STARS was born out of the vision of saving just one life. Soon, one life turned to two, and now 30 years later, STARS has flown more than 30,000 missions.
“Our story doesn’t end here, though,” she says. “STARS is busier than ever and in these challenging economic times we are relying on community support of the lottery to help us continue providing the highest level of care available.”
STARS Lottery raises more than $11 million net each year to help ensure the familiar red helicopters are able to continue helping critically ill and injured patients across the province. It is the single largest source of funding for STARS in Alberta.
