Funds raised by the lottery support the Foundation, raising essential funds for specialized adult health services and research at VGH & UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Research Institute, and Vancouver Community Health Services – for all British Columbians.

Every year, VGH performs more than 30,000 surgeries and treats more than 600,000 patient visits. The majority of the hospital’s surgical patients are from outside Vancouver – meaning, your lottery tickets support people across the province – and the VCH system sees over 94,000 emergency room visits every year.

“VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s frontline workers and medical teams cannot thank British Columbians enough for their generous support of the Hometown Heroes Lottery throughout the pandemic,” she continues. “For many of our staff, their workload doubled at times as they continued to meet the ongoing medical needs of individuals throughout the province, as well as the additional health emergencies of patients impacted by COVID-19.”

Ticket purchases also support programs of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, including burn survivor support services and resiliency programs for fire fighters.

“Lottery funds go towards Burn Fund programs that help burn survivors recover both physically and emotionally,” says Gord Ditchburn, President of the Burn Fund.

“2021 was another extremely challenging year for many, and the Burn Fund also dramatically felt the effects of COVID-19 on our fundraising efforts,” he says. “Over the past 24 months, we have had to put several of our burn prevention programs on hold, but many vital resilience-building programs still needed to operate to support burn survivors and their families. This is just one of the many reasons why the funds that the Burn Fund receives from the Hometown Heroes Lottery are so critical and continue to be incredibly important.”

From rescue to recovery, BC’s front-line workers and first responders – our fire fighters, along with the doctors, nurses, and health care teams at Vancouver General Hospital – are always on duty for critically ill and severely injured British Columbians.
