Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Carys

Carys from Moose Jaw, SK is a busy teenager, but a scoliosis diagnosis put her life on pause.

In June 2021, she was referred to Dr. Lauren Allen, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), who determined Carys needed spinal fusion surgery to repair the curvature in her spine. Carys missed her last month of grade 10 in June 2022 for the surgery to have two rods, 15 screws and a donor bone graft placed in her spine.

Her recovery was initially normal, but in August 2022, she started to have excruciating pain in her shoulder. A screw came loose and was causing the rod to pull away from her spine, which required another surgery. Carys didn’t feel as mentally prepared for the second surgery and felt quite anxious going into it. However, her trust in Dr. Allen and the JPCH team put her mind at ease. Through all the mental and physical challenges of the past couple of years, Carys said having a dedicated children’s hospital has been so important.

“I’ve been to a general hospital and it’s just not the same at all. It’s great knowing that there’s somewhere that kids like me and kids all over Saskatchewan can go to get treated and get help,” Carys said.

Carys continues her surgical care at JPCH and still has some challenges ahead. She recently found out she can never dance again, but she continues to have a positive attitude and works hard to get where she wants to be. The eleventh-grader is very focused on school, and hopes to work in the medical field one day.

Learn more about Carys’ story and buy tickets to support maternal and children’s care in Saskatchewan today.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Braxton

Braxton from Battleford, SK has been strong and determined since the day he entered the world. He and his twin sister were born premature at 29 weeks in July 2018. He weighed less than two pounds, but this was only the start of the barriers he has had to overcome. Braxton is neutropenic, which means he has few neutrophils – a type of white blood cell, causing him to get sick very easily.

The now four-year-old has spent so much of his life at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), there have been times he thought it was his home. With stays as long as 272 days at a time, JPCH is where Braxton learned to walk and talk. Braxton has been poked more than 3,000 times, had a general anesthetic over 30 times, and had numerous tests, scans and ultrasounds, but still doesn’t have an official diagnosis. Even though his medical journey is far from over, Braxton’s mom Raeanne says his care at JPCH has kept him alive.

“The experience is next to none. When you use the children’s hospital frequently, you really see the need,” Raeanne said.

Braxton’s journey continues to have complications and he still requires regular appointments and transfusions at JPCH, but he’s now able to spend more time with his three siblings in his hometown of Battleford and has even started pre-school – something that didn’t always seem possible. While he remains undiagnosed, his family is optimistic about the future.

“Even when times are tough, he always has a smile on his face. He sees the positive in everything,” Raeanne said about her son.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Moms Like Alison

Alison loves being a mom, but bringing life into the world came with some complications.

Alison lives with a variety of mental health diagnoses, including PTSD, anxiety and depression, which she anticipated would bring on additional challenges during pregnancy and child birth.

Alison’s daughter Kinsley was born pre-mature at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) in July 2020 and she spent a week in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Alison’s second pregnancy was much more complicated. Months before her due date, Alison had hydronephrosis, a build-up of urine in the kidneys, and was admitted to JPCH’s maternal unit. She was in immense pain and her mental health was declining during her nearly three months stay, but Alison says the staff at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital were a huge help.

“The nurses and doctors were super understanding of my whole situation. Not only are you being cared for, but you’re being heard and they do what they can to make you feel as comfortable as possible,” Alison said.

Alison was induced in August 2022 and her son Boomer was born a month early. He was extremely sick and small, receiving specialized care in Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital NICU for nearly a month before being able to go home. Today, both Boomer and Kinsley are healthy and thriving.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Cole

Cole lived a normal life in Shellbrook, SK before receiving a diagnosis that completely shocked him and his family. The teen started to have numbness in his nose and hand spasms in 2021. It didn’t initially raise concern, but just to be cautious, Cole saw a pediatrician who referred him to a neurologist.

In March 2022, Cole and his family made their first trip to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) for an electroencephalogram (EEG) – a test measuring electrical activity in the brain. At first it seemed like Cole could have epilepsy, but an MRI in the summer of 2022 confirmed he had a brain tumour.

While it was an extremely stressful time, Cole and his family were confident in the expertise and experience of the medical team at Saskatchewan’s JPCH. They felt well informed every step of the way, and eventually decided to have Cole’s marble-sized tumour removed in December 2022.

When asked how he felt before his surgery Cole said, “I felt comfortable knowing that I had one of the best surgeons here operating on me. That was definitely reassuring, but I was really just scared about it and the end results.”

Fortunately, Cole’s surgery was a success. Four days later, Cole was discharged from Saskatchewan’s JPCH and has been recovering well. Cole is an avid football fan and while his playing career has been put on pause, he says he’s starting to feel like his normal self again and hopes to be back exercising soon. Learn more about Cole’s story and buy tickets to support him and kids receiving specialized care today.
