Darby Hamilton had been plagued with headaches for the past few years, but this time was different. The pain left the 26-year old Mission resident screaming in agony. She was eventually transported to Royal Columbian Hospital – the region’s brain and spine centre – where she soon slipped into a coma.

Darby was diagnosed with a colloid cyst, a benign tumour located right in the geographic centre of her brain. It was blocking the regular flow of cerebrospinal fluid, a condition called hydrocephalus, causing immense pressure in her head.

“The day that Darby presented, she came closer to death than anyone that I have ever looked after,” says neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Nikolakis.

Darby was rushed into the operating room for an emergency procedure to ease the pressure in her head. Dr. Nikolakis inserted two catheters to drain the fluid. Darby was stabilized.

But in order to remove the tumour, which was in a very difficult and dangerous location, the medical team at Royal Columbian Hospital ordered a new piece of equipment that had never been used before in its facilities.

The NICO BrainPath allowed Dr. Nikolakis to slide a microcatheter right next to the tumour and gradually cut it off in pieces. Thanks to the new device, Dr. Nikolakis says, the operation went smoothly.

“It essentially caused no brain damage on our way in or out,” notes Dr. Nikolakis. “Darby woke up neurologically intact.”

Now, four months later, Darby has not had a single headache. She’s returned to work and her single side-effect is a droop on one side of her face.

“Every single nurse that I dealt with was so compassionate, and they clearly love what they do,” says Darby. “The doctors, they are just wonderful. Dr. Nikolakis, I mean, he saved my life. I couldn’t say more angelic things about the man. I just love this hospital.”

When you play, our patients win. Like Marcus Burry, who was born extremely prematurely at 24 weeks and 4 days and weighing just 755 grams at birth.

Marcus was delivered by emergency C-section and immediately placed in the care of Royal Columbian’s Variety Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of the only Level 3 NICUs in the province, providing care to the smallest and most vulnerable patients, including “micro preemies” like Marcus. He remained there for more than 4 months.

During his stay in the NICU, Marcus survived a number of complications, and after 132 days in care, he was finally healthy enough to go home to Surrey.

His mother, Makayla, is grateful to have him home and see him thriving. “Some days you feel like you’re going to be there forever, and it’s never going to end,” she says. “But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

When you play, our patients win. Like David Asencio, who received above and beyond care during his stay at Royal Columbian:

Seemingly out of nowhere, David had trouble breathing. No chest pains, but his daughter Angie could see the 76-year-old’s face was turning purple. After a 9-1-1 call, paramedics took David to Royal Columbian Hospital, where a large blood clot was found to be dangerously lodged in his lungs.

Fortunately, David did not have any serious problems with blood pressure or oxygenation. That allowed the medical team to bypass some of the more urgent treatments in favour of blood thinners to help stabilize the clot until the body can get rid of it naturally.

David was placed in Royal Columbian’s High Acuity Unit, which is meant for patients who need closer observation than a general unit but don’t require the full resources of the Intensive Care Unit.

“English is not his first language, and he has difficulty hearing,” notes his daughter. “But [Royal Columbian’s team] was very thorough in taking care of him, and somehow the staff would send someone who understood more of his language. That really made him very comfortable.”

After a few days, David was discharged from Royal Columbian but in need of follow up care to further understand the cause of the large clot. Being new to the country with no family physician, the family is grateful to Dr. Chu for seeing David through the next few months of his treatment.
