LONDON, ON, July 14, 2016 — It’s not every day that you get to have your choice of a 4,000 square foot three level home valued at $1.15 million, a 3,886 square foot home including a Lexus RX plus $200,000 cash, a modern loft condo complete with $400,000 cash, or $1 million cash. But for long-time ticket buyer Walter Ostanek, 81, of St. Catherines (Ticket #034769) that’s exactly what he gets! Ostanek, who has been buying assorted lottery tickets since the age of 14), is the lucky Ultimate Grand Prize Winner in the 2016 Spring London Dream Home Lottery. The draw was held Monday, July 11th at the office of Deloitte LLP 255 Queens Avenue, Suite 700, in London.
According to an official press released published by the lottery on July 16th, Ostanek, a triple Grammy award winning musician known as the “Polka King”, has selected the $1 million prize cheque. When he travelled from his hometown to pick up the cheque in London, he brought along his trusty accordion and friend and keyboardist Wayne Malton and treated the military veterans in the Western Counties Wing Auditorium at Parkwood Institute to a series of popular medleys. For Ostanek, any opportunity to make people “happy a little bit” is a pleasure.
Upon first hearing the news that he had won, Ostanek was in disbelief. He was at work at a regular gig at Marineland in Niagara Falls when a friend asked how it felt to be a millionaire. It was until after he was interviewed by a local radio station, and he was getting ready for bed, that his new millionaire status really started to sink in. When asked if the win will allow the musician a reprieve from his constant road trips, concerts, and TV shows, Ostanek replied, “It’s up to the good Lord, because I’m not selling my accordion!”
In a draw held one day later, also on-site at the office of Deloitte LLP, Dale Wilson of London (Ticket #5035946) was named as the 50/50 winner, taking home an impressive $475,935 cash. As shared in the release, Wilson also has ties to the Parkwood veterans having worked with them as a family doctor at the facility for over 20 years. Like Ostanek, Wilson also had doubts about his win and when lottery officials finally got ahold of him, Wilson simply stated “We’ve been supporting Dream Lottery for years. We’re thrilled.” That night, not only did he take home the clinic’s laundry when leaving work, he also left with a big display cheque announcing his win under one arm.
As per the official lottery Rules of Play, the primary ticket purchaser will be notified by mail by Deloitte LLP as to what they have won and where/how to claim their prize(s). Major prize winners may be notified by phone and be published in the “Our London” newspaper on Thursday, July 21, 2016. A complete list of winners will also be posted online on the same date, at dreamitwinit.ca or can be requested by calling 1-866-319-9818.
