About Royal Columbian Hospital:
From the beginning, Royal Columbian Hospital has stood at the heart of health care in British Columbia. Created by visionary pioneers to provide compassionate care to those building a new province, we have participated in the social and economic changes of British Columbia since 1862. Today, we are one of British Columbia’s busiest hospitals, serving a population of close to two million people. We are a regional referral hospital for cardiac, trauma, neurosciences, high-risk maternity and neonatal intensive care. No other hospital in the province provides all of these services, at this level of care, on one site. We provide the highest level of care to the most critically ill and injured from throughout the province.
Celebrating Royal Columbian Hospital’s Stars!
RCH is celebrating the dedication and compassion of those who work and volunteer at Royal Columbian. Donors can provide Special Thanks And Recognition (STAR) gifts to give back to our hospital family and the patients who rely on them.
STAR award recipient, Dr. Matthew Bernard is motivated by a sense of duty to his patients. “Our job is to treat people the way that we would want to be treated; the way our moms and dads, brothers, sisters, wives and husbands would want to be treated.”
“I love the diversity of the patient population we have here. I love the interactions and the relationships we build with patients. Very often, I will sit down beside a patient, talk with them and spend time with them. It’s very rewarding to engage with people and make them feel cared for.”
When asked what receiving a STAR award meant to him, Dr. Bernard states, “to know that people appreciate the care at Royal Columbian, it’s fantastic. It’s humbling and it’s obviously a huge honour.”
Royal Columbian’s Dr. Matthew Bernard is an internal medicine specialist, a Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC, and an RCH redevelopment Physician Lead.
