Bright Nights 50/50 Supports BC Kids!

VANCOUVER, BC, December 16, 2022 — BC professional fire fighters support burn survivors through every step of their healing journey – from fundraising to volunteering as counsellors at Burn Camp.

You can support the fire fighters’ charity by purchasing your Bright Nights 50/50 ticket now – the jackpot is over $192,000 and counting!

To Jules Walker-Renney, fire fighters are heroes. Vancouver fire fighters from Fire Hall Number 1 rescued him in March 2019 when he was burned.

Just shy of his fourth birthday, Jules was cooking chicken soup with his mom – a regular activity for the family. Eager to help, he pulled up a children’s chair to the stove and when he lost his balance he reached for the soup, which toppled over on him. It happened in seconds.

Jules sustained fourth-degree burns to 21 per cent of his body and spent weeks at BC Children’s Hospital.

Just like the fire fighters who responded to the call, Jules displayed incredible bravery throughout his recovery. The resilient and spirited little boy formed a strong bond with these four fire fighters, who visited him in the hospital.

When the Burn Fund announced a $1 million donation to build a new burn unit, it was clear who should be on the plaque which will hang in the unit: Jules and his heroes. These photos are from that photoshoot.

Jules is now seven years old and March will be the fourth anniversary of his accident. This past summer he attended Burn Camp for the first time, where he made great friends with other young burn survivors – some of whom he met during the Little Lionhearts Family Retreat.

Jules is as spirited as ever and has a running joke with his favourite Burn Camp counsellor, Fire Fighter Umesh Lal, about where fire fighters at camp land on the awesome scale (during Bun Camp water fights they are “super awesome.”)
