Having access to affordable, healthy, and nourishing food, is the baseline humans need for survival. But many people living with mental illness aren’t able to meet this basic need.

When people are hungry, nutrition is the last consideration. The effects of a poor diet can add to problems vulnerable people already face, like weakened immune systems, diabetes, and vitamin deficiencies. This makes them open to other infectious diseases like COVID-19, and it makes it harder for them to recover.

Basic services like these are a critical resource for people living with mental illness. You can help.

With the urgent need for increased critical care capacity, this campaign aims to raise $7 million to help fund the construction of a new permanent, purpose-built 8-bed High Acuity Unit (HAU) at Royal Jubilee Hospital, a first for Island Health.

Without HAUs, the pressure placed on adjacent departments—like acute care units and Emergency Departments—is heightened when hospitals respond to threats like COVID-19.
