About AutismBC

AutismBC is a small, non-profit charity that encourages inclusion and acceptance for the entire autism community. We value lived experience and prioritize listening so we can make decisions that reflect the community’s needs and wants.

We are a grassroots organization founded in 1975 to support people on the autism spectrum and their families. Since our humble beginnings, we have grown to become one of the most trusted non-profit organizations for autism in BC. The AutismBC programs have become my lifeline, I attend the monthly community support group meetings and I appreciate the professional people who come to share information, I learn something at every meeting.  I also attend the social meetup events; these are high priority for me. Meeting other families who share similar circumstances is encouraging, enlightening and supportive.

Every story is unique and I always pick up some information that is helpful for my circumstances. It is so comforting to know I am not alone on this journey. Through my journey with AutismBC I have been empowered to enrich many aspects of my grandchild’s life.”

Your Impact at Royal Columbian Hospital:

When you play, our patients win. Like Marcus Burry, who was born extremely prematurely at 24 weeks and 4 days and weighing just 755 grams at birth.

Marcus was delivered by emergency C-section and immediately placed in the care of Royal Columbian’s Variety Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of the only Level 3 NICUs in the province, providing care to the smallest and most vulnerable patients, including “micro preemies” like Marcus. He remained there for more than 4 months.

During his stay in the NICU, Marcus survived a number of complications, and after 132 days in care, he was finally healthy enough to go home to Surrey.

His mother, Makayla, is grateful to have him home and see him thriving. “Some days you feel like you’re going to be there forever, and it’s never going to end,” she says. “But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Your lottery purchase helps support the exceptional care that Royal Columbian’s NICU provides throughout the Fraser Health region.

According to BC Stats, today in BC there are 22,000 children on the autism spectrum, and the autism rate has increased from 1 in 37 children in 2019 to 1 in 32 this year. Along with these rising diagnostic rates, at AutismBC we have seen an increase in requests for services and supports.

“Last year we experienced a 109% increase of in-depth calls that lasted over 20 minutes with our support staff from people who were struggling to find the right kind of support, says AutismBC Program Manager Brock Sheppard. “People needed someone to listen to, to answer their questions, to provide information, and to know they are not alone. Funding we receive from our raffle and from donors allows us to be there to answer these calls, and meaningfully connect people to community level supports and the right information.” The funds raised in the 2022 AutismBC Raffle and 50/50 presented by Applewood Auto Group are crucial to the provincial charity.
