Kyla and her family got an exciting surprise when they found out she was pregnant at the age of 41. She had been told conceiving naturally may not happen at her age. 

At 36 weeks, Kyla started being monitored weekly at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) until the baby was born. At 40 weeks, Kyla was scheduled for an induction due to maternal age and gestational diabetes. Beautiful baby Hazel arrived happy and healthy weighing 9lbs. Kyla and her family were extremely pleased with their experience as she reflected on her maternal journey.

“Being able to stay in one room the entire time was a huge difference from when I had my first child 14 years ago. There was more privacy, dignity, and respect during every stage, and having my own bathroom and shower was a game changer. Seven-year-old Jaxon was involved in a quad rollover and had to be airlifted to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He sustained skull fractures, a broken jaw, and had several strokes as a result of the accident. 

Jaxon underwent a five hour brain surgery and was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where he received round-the-clock intensive care for months including being tube fed for 80 days in total.

Once Jaxon was discharged he continued to have outpatient physiotherapy at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for three hours each day five days a week from January until June 2021. He continued to have outpatient speech therapy and transitioned back into his home school for the last three weeks of the 2021 school season. Learn more about Jaxon’s story.

Elara lives with complex care needs, after being born with a rare congenital heart defect. Her chronic health conditions have led to numerous stays at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and as a result, Elara was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“PTSD is a challenge in kids because, to be frank, Elara only knows this life that she has,” said Elara’s mom, Tara. “Elara doesn’t talk about the things that she has been through, she endures them. Despite all that, she loves going to the hospital, and we have always taken solace in that because it’s a testament to the care she gets there. When Torrie was only nine, her life changed forever after receiving a shocking diagnosis of a rare blood disease. It started in 2016 when she was admitted to hospital in Regina with a low platelet count. Soon after she had no platelet count at all and was airlifted to Saskatoon’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The perfect treatment for Torrie’s rare, serious blood disease was a special piece of equipment, which was thankfully purchased just six months before her diagnosis with funding from Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Torrie’s story then took another shocking turn last year when she was also diagnosed with lupus, a chronic, autoimmune disease. Now 14, Torrie often needs to visit Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for specialized care to continue to keep her health in check.

A research team at the University of Saskatchewan is aiming to develop a new smartphone app to help support the caregivers of children and adolescents with mental health and addiction disorders. The research project, supported by Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, is aiming to create an accessible and innovative app, in which caregivers can find reliable information, improve social support, connectedness and enhance well-being.

While caregivers are the backbone of the health care system by providing unpaid care, they often receive very little support and bear an increasing amount of distress. Caregivers often report experiencing a higher level of depressive and anxiety symptoms, adverse physical health, and decreased quality of life. Dr. Hua Li (RN, PhD) and Dr. Lorraine Holtslander (RN, PhD) are leading the two-year pilot project to develop the app, which they believe has great potential to impact the health of Saskatchewan residents.

In January, Morgan from Prince Albert stopped to help a stranger who was stuck in the ditch and was then hit by a passing vehicle. The 17-year-old was then airlifted to Saskatoon to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, the only one of its kind in Saskatchewan.

Morgan’s injuries were extensive, including six broken ribs, a shattered shoulder with multiple fractures, damage to his pancreas, a laceration to his kidney, his spleen had to be removed, and he required dozens of stitches to his head.

After two weeks of care in the PICU, Morgan was able to return home to continue his recovery journey. The mobility of his arm and shoulder has been greatly restricted but he’s regained some movement while currently undergoing physiotherapy.

When Harper and her twin brother, Knox, were born, Harper needed to be transported from Prince Albert to Saskatoon’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by the Neonatal Transport Team. Harper required immediate CPR after delivery because she was not breathing, and her tiny body was placed on a cooling mat to help reduce the risk of brain damage.

The fragile moments during Harper’s emergency transport are exactly what the Neonatal Transport Team prepares for to make all the difference in a baby’s outcome. Thankfully, Harper was able to rise above her challenges in Saskatoon’s NICU once the transport was complete and the family arrived home in Prince Albert one week later.
